Geography
The Geography department aims to guide learners through investigating the amazing, unique and wonderful parts of our world. Geography is awe inspiring and we aim to squeeze in as many jaw dropping and wonder packed moments as possible. Learners find out about the processes that shape our landscape; how human beings interact with each other and the world; what hazards the earth presents and how to manage these; what makes biomes unique; why some places are poorer or richer than others; where places are; why some places are drier than others; what resources are important; and where to find resources and what might happen if they run out.
KS3
Learners are provided with expert teaching from our team of subject specialists. We strive to make the learning as up to date as possible and regularly incorporate the latest storms, earthquakes or other global events in our teaching, Geography sessions are therefore dynamic. Because Geography is dynamic we are able to give learners plenty of choice about which sections of the Geographical content interest and intrigue them the most. They are then guided into how to learn in a geographical way: learning skills of finding and describing places; interdependence; map skills; inequality; asking geographical questions; and using evidence to back up their ideas. Some of the areas of study which are focussed upon are learner investigations of tectonic movement and the associated hazards and responses, and the real story behind migration and the UK's relationship with people struggling around the world; We also have topics on food and farming, resources, how water shapes our landscape and more.
GCSE
At Key stage 4 the primary aim of the course is to create good Geographers who have a wide range of knowledge about their planet and a wide range of skills for accessing and explaining their knowledge. The focus is not confined to the GCSE specification but looks at Geography in the news, current affairs, Geography in the workplace and the Geography of their local area. We follow the OCR B specification as it is 'Geography for the Enquiring Mind' and that ethos marries up to the Honywood values perfectly.
Geographical themes that are covered at KS4 include:
Natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes and droughts. Our Changing Climate and who or what is to blame. Sustaining Ecosystems, where are the major ecosystems and why do they deserve our respect and protection? Dynamic development such as jobs and money around the world and why some countries are richer or poorer than others. Distinctive landscapes where we learn about how water shapes the landscape, flooding, coastal features and management. Urban Futures, why do so many of us live in cities and is this sustainable?
The UK in the 21st century; learners have a chance to learn all about their own country and the unique challenges and opportunities we will face in the future including the UK's role in the war in Afghanistan. Resource Reliance is where we discuss challenging issues such as whether there will ever be a way to feed all humans.
